If, for example, you use a UK or Italy CD now, this Europe DVD is not suitable for your system.
MFD2 is a non touch screen unit which needs to have the map DVD in the drive for the navigation to work. Earlier units were CD based. Later units were DVD based and had 'chrome' (plastic) buttons.
Cannot play video DVDs without an external DVD player. CD multichanger is needed if you want to play CDs and have the navigation active.

TMC only works in the UK with the 2007 or later map DVD. Prices seemed to start at about £350 last time I looked. RNS510 is a touch screen unit with an internal 30Gb hard drive. Maps are installed onto the hard drive leaving about 18Gb free for music. Can play video DVDs when the car is stationary or when moving with an optional video in motion module. Can play MP3's either from the hard drive, SD card slot or CD/DVD.
TMC works out of the box. Much faster to calculate and recalculate routes than the MFD2. Prices are around £750 or so.
Installation for both of them is an absolute doddle. 10 minutes maximum. My dad has an Ipod and would prefer Ipod connection than CD changer. Is there an Ipod cable than can replace the CD changer and play Ipod whilst Sat Nav is on.
For the MFD2 the only VW option is the original iPod connector which goes in place of the CD changer. To be honest though, it's pretty crap. Because it uses the CD changer interface you are stuck with the limitations of that interface - no track names and so on. Also it uses the firewire pins to charge the iPod so if your Dad has a newer classic, Nano or Touch then it won't charge as they only charge using USB. You can get a little converter box that swaps the wires around and steps down the voltage from 12v to 5v but they're pretty expensive for what they are. The kit is about £70 or so.

For the 510 you can use the iPod interface I mentioned above but a better (albeit more expensive) option is the MDI Interface. There's more information about it at http: //vwnavi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7474 (sorry about the link nto working but hte forum is buggering links up). Alien skin exposure 7 serial number. This is the option I went for and there are some pictures in that thread of it installed in my car. How often does a new disc come out for the sat nav and how much do the tend to cost? About every 18 months I think. For the RNS510 we are on v3 which is the same as v2 but with some bugs fixed to make the postcode searching work.
Prices are about £180 from a dealer but the maps are often available on torrent sites. How does it compare in sound to the RCD300?
I can't say for definite as my.:R came with the RCD500 but I did noticed a big difference with the 510. That said, it wasn't until I got the front speakers changed that I realised just how bad the OEM audio in the Golf was.

Edited by burble, 20 January 2009 - 10:45 AM. Thank you Burble, just read your posts on the vwnavi site too. I have the Rcd500 with the armrest ipod link and the Parrot 3100 bluetooth. (both dealer fit).
It has always bothered me about not viewing the ipod track names etc and not being able use the mfsw properly with the parrot kit. Do i have the correct ipod link for the rns510 or do i need the mdi? Also is there a phone kit that will work with the 510 and the mfsw? Soz for all the questions mate, but you seem to know your stuff.
Thanks again, Carlo. The iPod cable you've got will work with the RNS510 but you will need to swap the earth cable in the connector from pin 2 to pin 3 otherwise the sound will be quite muffled. However you still won't get track names showing on the screen and that's down to a limitation of the CD changer interface on the headunits which that particular iPod connector plugs into. So yeah, to get tracks names on display you need the MDI interface. As for using the phone with the MFSW you can get the which should do the trick. If you wanted a kit that integrated with the MFSW, 510 & DIS then there is the and units to choose from. I've got the Skoda unit in my.:R and it does the job very nicely.
The Skoda unit is quite a lot cheaper than the Fiscon but doesn't do stuff like let you read SMS messages on the move. Can't say I'm at all bothered by that. I like the Skoda and Fiscon units because they integrate very well and are completely hidden - no external LCD screens anywhere. Edited by burble, 16 March 2009 - 07:26 AM. I don't see why you couldn't do what you want.
The Skoda unit is controlled over the CanBus so as long as that's all connected it should be ok. Yep, it can be controlled from the MFD. You can scroll through the phonebook, dial phone the phonebook and list the last received, dialled and missed calls. You can't dial a number not in the phonebook though - for that you either need to use the headunit or you can recode the MFSW so that the mute button gives you voice activated dialling and you can then tell it to 'dial number' and read out the number you want. Whilst the 510 has a 30Gb hard drive once you've copied the maps onto the HD you have about 18.2Gb left for music. I bought my BT unit from Stu who owns the site that I linked to. My intention was to buy it and install it myself but in March last year I broke my leg and couldn't kneel down so Stu did it for me one Saturday as he was heading to Ed38.

My 510 came from eBay from a seller in Holland but he seems to have vanished. A few eBay sellers get good reports on vwnavi.com so maybe get in touch with one of them. Installing the 510 is a doddle, it takes about 10-15 minutes maximum. I'm sure I've posted pictures on here showing how to remove the headunit, I'll see if I can find them. There are 2 different version of the 510 - A & B. I was told that they used slightly different hardware with the motherboard on the B versions have at least 1 extra chip.
In operation there isn't that much in it. A versions have the volume bar in the middle of the screen, B versions have it at the bottom. B versions remember where you were in a list of directories if you go into, then back out of a directory whereas the A versions didn't. B versions could import destinations saved to the SD card, A versions could not.
A recent firmware release (v1100) for the A units gives them everything that B units could do to the point where if you scan the an A version 510 with firmware v1100 on it it actually identifies itself as a B version. So in other words it doesn't actually matter.
Updating the firmware on an A unit is just a case of burning an image to a CD and loading that CD into the 510 then waiting about an hour. I've got the firmware here so can give you a download link. One important thing to note though - when you update the firmware of an A unit to 1100 it wipes the hard drive so any music and more important navigation maps on there will need to be reloaded so make sure you have the map DVD before you start.

To buy they are not cheap LOL I'm afraid I must ignore your little tease there I am actually somebody who is totally against piracy of all types. To give you an example - at home me and wife each have a desktop PC. We allso own a laptop and I also have a server. All 4 of these machines are 100% license legal on every single piece of software they run. Right down to the 3 copies (server doesn't require) of WinZip I bought.
I don't allow pirate music or movies in the house, certainly don't download them. I'm just totally anti-piracy.
